The Lost City...

Description

...that was found!

This is a collage of pictures from Pompeii, created and posted at the request of the awesome and ever-talented :icontheancientofdays:! He wanted to see what the buildings looked like since most people really only see pictures of the dead people...

So Pompeii. Not too many words can describe it. I mean, the city was buried following the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius on August 30th (that should be the right date) around noon in 79 A.D. and somehow all of these ruins and even some bodies were preserved! I could've spent another day there, but unfortunately it started to drizzle and we didn't even get to see all of it.

From left to right: (these were placed into the collage in the order that I took them)
1 - This is Pompeii from the outside. It's what you see before you actually enter the city.
2 - The Basilica: court cases took place here. When Christianity took over, the basilicas were used as churches.
3 - The Forum, with Vesuvius in the back. It's the only active volcano on the main Italian Peninsula.
4 - The Market: There were two dead bodies and some frescoes in here when we went. The 12 pillars in the middle were believed to be part of some kind of tank where Pompeiians could choose their own fish to purchase from the market. (That's from a tour book)
5 - An arched ceiling (with some skylights?) in the public bathhouse. If I remember correctly, it was one of the only buildings that still had a ceiling/roof...
6 - Fountain: In some rich dude's house. I think the Latin teacher who took us said that it's made of a mosaic. There was also a really nice fresco surrounding it.
7 - House: It was closed, so no awesome pictures of it. But that's somebody's house.
8 - Small Amphitheater: This is where the stage would've been if it had made it. They performed comedies and tragedies there. When we were sitting in there, a Spanish school came and a student and teacher started performing! Too bad I couldn't understand what they were saying. But he threw a shoe at her! :O
9 - Large Amphitheater: Where gladiator fights took place. We were standing where the fighting took place; this is a picture of the seats above us.

So there you have it! The last picture also has an arch in it, which :iconlotusofagirl: asked me to post pictures of.

Hope you guys liked seeing Pompeii!
